In daily life, I need to make different kinds of decisions, like which restaurants to have my lunch, which elective subjects should I choose for my senior form studies. Now I am facing a big problem that is what should I major in. The major I choose will determine my future studies and even my career. As a scientific discipline student, there are not many subjects for us to select. I have to think about different aspects to pick the most suitable major for my future studies and hope I can use the knowledge I learnt in university in my job.
There are two programmes I want to major in, one is Applied Biology and the other one is Environment Science and Management. If I choose the major as Applied Biology, this programme requires student study at Molecular Life Sciences, Environmental Biology, Applied Microbiology and complemented with a solid grounding in chemical science. Although biology is one of my favourite subjects and experiments in this subject are very interesting, in fact studying at Applied Biology need to explain evolutionary theory based on observations in the laboratory and field studies. We have to write a laboratory report to explain those observation, but it is not easy to finish and I am not good at this work. In addition to laboratory report is a big problem to me, a major may judge my life. In Hong Kong, there are few work provide for the students who focus on science subject. Since Hong Kong is an international financial centre, focus on economic development. Most of science subject's students cannot work on their professional in the future. If they really want to work on science aspect, they have to continue studying to get a Master degree or be a researcher at university. Honestly, it is not what I want, I want to use what I learnt in my career.
Compare with Applied Biology, I think Environment Science and Management is much suitable for me. This programme aims at teaching students the knowledge on environment topics. Chemistry and Biology are included in the topics, I am good at chemistry and biology got a nice grade in DSE . I am confident that I can do my best in this area. Apart from the content of the programme, the career prospect is also better than Applied Biology. This programme is more practical for thw reason that it concentrate on environment issues. Since people put more attention on environmental issues today, government, factories and non government organizations like Greenpeace need this sort of professional. After graduating I do not have to worry about employment and it also fulfils my expectation.
People major in Environment Science and Management need to contain good leadership and problem solving skills. I was the Vice Chairperson of the Science Society at secondary school. My duties were holding many kinds of activities for our schoolmates and allocating work to teammates. While I was planning the activities, I encountered many obstacles. Thankfully I could tackle problems with my teammates, it made me believe that teamwork is the key to success for everything. Moreover, it made me know to solve the problem must be step by steps and be calm while dealing with difficulties. Not only do those experiences brush up my analytical skills, but I also believe it will be useful to my studies.
I am aspired to develop an environmental career and have the perseverance and determination to pursue this dream. Whatever position I have in the future, with the knowledge I acquired, I hope I can try my best to serve the community. With the faith in myself, I will be able to achieve greatness in the coming days.
